Blog 29: Fat and Happy?

For this blog I read another article on Commonplace called Fat and Happy? This article told about how obesity in our country is becoming a more and more common thing.  The article tells about how in recent years obesity has been labeled the number one preventable cause of death and the next generation of children may be the first to be unhealthier and live shorter lives than their parents.  I think that this is all really sad and I don’t want one of my kids in the future to end up like this.  The article also tells that this is preventable if children get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day and they eat healthy.  I think that schools should be more nutrition conscious because I remember back when I ate school lunches they were I no way healthy.  I think that parents should also start their kids young and make them eat fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods so that they will grow to like them.  Parents should be a good example for their kids because it’s proven that they look up to them and are more likely to do something that they see them doing.  Instead of taking them out to lunch at McDonalds or some other fast food restaurant they could take them somewhere a little healthier like panera.  I hope that there are measures taken in the future to alleviate this problem because it’s a huge problem and something needs to be done right away.

  3. I read this article too. It really freaks me out to think of the obesity outbreak.

What I found most interesting about the article is what the author said about whose responsibility it is to fix the problem.

If you had to come up with a solution, policy, etc to the problem, what would you propose? does the government do it? Do we make programs? Are they mandatory? Is it an individual family's job?

  4. I think it should both be a government and family effort. Obviously parents should want their children to be healthy and should instill in them good eating habits. Also, I think that the government should make it a requirement that schools have gym classes that everyone is required to take for the recommended amount of time. Also, schools should offer healthier choices for meals.

  5. I think that a healthier life style starts when kids are young. You can teach them about general wellness form the start so they can carry it eith them as they grow up.

  6. Reading your blog made me think about the obesity of the world in the future. This idea is portrayed in the movie Wall-E. I know its cheesey that I have seen this movie but it makes a good point. It shows the world in the future and everyone is sitting on a hoovering chair witheverything catered to them by robots. The humans in the chair are extremely fat and have actually lost bone structure because of it. This shows that the issue is not only what you eat but how much you exercise. I believe that you can eat what you want as long as you have a good work out that can burn the calories away. More kids need to go outside and exercise instead of sit inside and mess with their many forms of technology.
