Blog 36: Personal Anecdote

I think that when we are getting ready to head off to college we are told so many times about the freshman 15 that we begin to think that it is inevitable.  In all reality I think that we can all prevent it if we want to but you have to put in the effort.  Drinking is probably the biggest contributor to the weight gain that some people experience.  Alcohol is a lot of empty calories and they can add up quickly.  A shot of just plain vodka is 70 calories and if someone takes seven shots before they go out that’s already 490 calories, almost an entire meal.  Beer is even worse for you with about 150 calories per 12 oz can.  Another thing that I believe contributes to weight gain is not having a set schedule that you can stick to.  College brings with it a lot of stress and many people can’t manage their time well enough to make time to go to the gym.  Back in high school most people had organized sports where they went to practice everyday and got their exercise that way.  Now, you have the freedom to manage your time however you want and many don’t get everything they need to done.  I think if people take these two topics into account, as well as others that I will tell about in my paper then they can prevent becoming a statistic and be happy and healthy.
